The first episode of MDM on the Road presents the successful iPad Program of Mary Help of Christians Academy. Our Chief Inspiration Officer, Fredy Padovan (@EDjuvinator), met Sr. Brittany Harrison (@sisterb24), who is responsible for managing over 200 devices using the Mosyle Manager MDM solution.
She explains an intuitive mobile device management tool helps her set up Apple devices in the school and supports daily routines. Elizabeth Manzella, Assistant Principal, and Mary Help’s teachers also share the importance of classroom management and meaningful technology integration in the classroom to engage students.

Welcome to the Garden State - our first stop on the road takes us to North Haledon, New Jersey to Mary Help of Christians Academy, an all girls college preparatory high school built on a 75 year tradition of forming students into articulate and confident leaders by offering a beautiful campus, diverse courses, talented teachers and of course the latest technology to improve the education experience.
Sr. Brittany Harrison is Mary Help’s iPad Program Director and is responsible for managing over 200 devices and supporting the students and faculty on their iPad journey.
Sr. Brittany Harrison says “technology’s role in education is to be a powerful tool. That teachers can use in the classroom in order to help the students to learn the material more fully.” She continues, “with previous device management software systems it was very difficult and kind of workflow heavy in terms of restricting what apps for present on the iPads to the students during school time. Setting up schedules could be difficult and learning even how to do that was confusing.”
With Mosyle it is very easy. It took a little bit of effort and a little coaching from Mosyle Support and I’ve learned how to set up which apps are allowed during the school day which completely eliminated having to worry about playing whack-a-mole with new apps that children are downloading on their iPads. All I have to do is say what they could use and then all these other ones disappear during the school-day. It was amazing!
Elizabeth Manzella, Assistant Principal: if you want teachers to adopt technology and be able to integrate it into the curriculum, they need administrative support and they need professional development. It has to be on going, it has to build and they also have to feel like there is someone they can go to, including each other, to support each other.
Sr. Brittany Harrison: The most important function of my role at Mary Help of Christians Academy is to help the teachers to use the technology in the classroom in a way that helps them to succeed and the students to feel confident. I educate the teachers on how to use the iPads, teach them on how to use the management system and enable the students to feel confident and comfortable with the technology that we are providing them.
David Dunn, Social Studies: The role that technology plays in the classroom, specifically within my classroom, is that it gives the student an opportunity to explore the different aspects of history because it is a very visual subject. It is no longer just words on a page, we can start to explore the art of a given time, we can look at the maps of where things happened and students can now zoom in, zoom out, make notations right there on their iPads through this digital technology, and it gives them a little bit more ownership of what the subject is.
Maddalena Piscitelli, Italian & Art: In my classroom I support technology by designing my lessons so that students are creating projects on the iPads in order to demonstrate their knowledge. And you know it just gets the students to stay organized. As a teacher in the classroom, I love using Mosyle Manager because I am able to not only take attendance on there but also to ensure that students are on task.
Elizabeth Manzella, Assistant Principal: Classroom management is key, however an engaged student needs less management. So the one thing I love about having the iPads in the classroom with Mosyle as a management tool is that as soon as the students walk in, they are engaged, they are doing something, and I can see what they are doing… they already know what the limitations are because Mosyle allows me create boundaries for them in what I need them to do.
Sr. Brittany Harrison: On our Back-to-School night, we introduced the parents to ScreenGuide which integrates with the Mosyle system and it enables parents to restrict the iPads at home, put them in “time-out”, lock them out of certain apps and give them permissions or lack of permissions for different things they can do on their device. This puts the power back into the parent's hands to manage their child’s devices and gives them the ability to also have a conversation with their child about what kind of uses for technology are appropriate for home.
Sr. Brittany Harrison concludes: A piece of advice that I would give to anybody who is in my position, who is trying to establish and build up an iPad program, would be to go slowly. Try to find what your outcome would be for the first year. Consider what you want the students’ and teachers’ experiences to be. Mosyle can be a great part of that in terms of making it easier for you to help teachers and students facilitate that experience.
