Refreshing education technology and iPads in school using Mosyle Manager

It's time to refresh EdTech! Refreshing education technology in schools and/or districts demands a solid plan and good tools that can help technology and instructional staff along the way. This episode of MDM on the Road showcases a great case study to assist you during your EdTech refresh!

Our Chief Inspiration Officer Fredy Padovan (@EDjuvinator) met Cardinal Gibbons Catholic High School, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and captured the school’s refresh project of their 1,200 iPads with the support of Mosyle Manager mobile device management solution.

The Assistant Principal Thomas Mahon explains the important role of technology staff during the EdTech refresh to support students and teachers, and how Mosyle’s Support Team assists the educational institution along the way.

Our next stop on the road takes us back to the sunshine state to Cardinal Gibbons Catholic High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Since 2011 they have been using Apple products as part of their education technology plan and have committed to keeping the technology current for their teachers and students. The school recently completed a mid school year refresh of their over 1200 iPads.

Jay Fradet, Director Information Technology - This is the third time we are doing a refresh. The first time was done over the summer, while it was successful it was a little bit clunky. This refresh and the prior refresh we’ve done it during the school year without incident, it has worked out very well for us.

For our current refresh, what we are doing is calling the students in by class so we have anywhere from 24 - 35 students at a time. After the students come in we check their old iPads to make sure that they have all of their notes backed up to iCloud or Google Drive or somewhere on the cloud. After that they are given their new iPad, take the case off the old iPad, we check for cracks, breaks, warpage, and then we start to configure their new iPad.

With their new iPads, we’ve already assigned books to them through Mosyle Manager so as they sit here during the class all their other apps show up. After that we check to make sure that their notes and things have come into their new iPad, we walk them through the process of wiping their old device, they turn it in, and if they have an acceptable charger and cord they get a new one otherwise they are charged our cost to replace that or they bring in a new one within a day or two.

Cardinal Gibbons has set out to refresh their devices every two years and the school administration attributes the ability to keep everything current and within budget by stressing the importance of trusting your technology staff.

Thomas Mahon, Assistant Principal - As administrators we have to take the long view, we have to point in the direction that we want to move but your technology people are just so critical. They get you the best deals on devices, they stay current on the cutting edge technology in terms of apps, in terms of hardware and software.

For example, with our refresh it was one of our tech people who said listen “we need to do this, we’ll get the best price for the iPads.” So, you need to work as an administration very closely with your tech people, it’s vital that you do that.

With prior experiences refreshing their iPads with other mobile device management solutions Cardinal Gibbons found the best fit with Mosyle to ensure that everything would happen as stress free as possible.

Shaun White, Network Administrator - If carefully planned, a refresh can be pulled off pretty seamlessly leaving the rest of the technology department more room during the summer for other projects that we wouldn’t otherwise not be able to get to in time.

Our experience has been overall a very easy transition from our previous MDM, we’ve had very few bumps along the way. Mosyle’s support team has been fantastic at helping us tailor the product to our school’s individual needs.
