Tuckerton Elementary School has an innovative 1:1 iPad Program for its Kindergarten and for 1st Grades, that combines traditional and digital workflows to teach skills, differentiate instruction and offer creative projects to engage their young learners.
Kyle Calderwood is the Technology Coordinator and Tech Coach for the School, who oversees the management of the devices and their Mac lab.
Kyle Calderwood, Technology Coordinator for Tuckerton Elementary School: Using Mosyle to manage our devices has been fantastic because it allows me to get back to the teachers quicker. Before I was using Apple Configurator, so I had to go down to their classroom, I had to clear it with the teacher to make sure when all the kids are in the room. We had a laptop in each cart, so I had to physically get down there and manage those devices.
Now I can do it right from the comfort of my desk and it allows me to get back to them pretty quickly, especially if they are looking for certain app. Everything is more focused on the learning rather than the device, setting it up and getting everything in control. So now it's more about the lesson as it should be.
Melissa Steele, Kindergarten Teacher at Tuckerton Elementary School: I think technology's role in Education is to help differentiate instruction for students. I use it often. I am the only teacher in the classroom, so I use it to put children on different apps and different programs to help them with their strengths and weaknesses. When I can’t always give them the individual attention that they need.
Sandra Gormley, Kindergarten Teacher at Tuckerton Elementary School: we use small groups centers, so anywhere from three to five students are using iPads in the classroom. We also have a stand-alone computer that they use further on their free time.
Maureen Gunzenhauser, 1st Grade Teacher at Tuckerton Elementary School: in our classroom, to be creative, we take what we already do so for example in writing they will write a piece and then use the iPads to read and record what they written and they will video it so their parents can see it.
Melissa Steele, Kindergarten Teacher at Tuckerton Elementary School: children's reactions to technology in my classroom are usually really excited. As soon as I pull out the iPads or we use the Promethean board, they are ready to go and they are really good at it. Sometimes better than I am, better than their parents. So it's neat to see they already know what they are doing, they already know how to use the technology.
Sandra Gormley, Kindergarten Teacher at Tuckerton Elementary School: my advice for new teachers would be make sure that you checked out all the apps first before you go to your IT person. Some apps have a lot of in-purchase stuff. You want to use apps that are inviting for the kindergartners or your classroom, whatever your age level is, pick something that is appropriate for them. Using the headphones in the classroom cuts a lot of the noise, so I would definitely have every student have a headphone and a stylus.
Kyle Calderwood, Technology Coordinator for Tuckerton Elementary School: part of my job here is professional development so I’m out there looking for tools for these teachers and they are also bringing new tools to me. I’m fortunate to have teachers who if I give them a new program and say “hey, do you want to check this out?” Most of them jump right on board.
