What’s new on Apple’s Automated Device Enrollment

Apple’s Automated Device Enrollment is the newly updated process of helping schools deploy their Apple devices. This process was formerly known as the Device Enrollment Program (DEP), and is now only available through Apple School Manager. Automated Device Enrollment has the same capabilities and use the same process as DEP. Keep in mind that DEP and the VPP deployment program will no longer be available starting December 1, 2019. In this article, we will go over what the capabilities of Automated Device Enrollment are and talk about the Customized Setup Assistant made available with iOS 13, iPadOS and macOS Catalina. In addition to this, we will go over the new Basic Startup Area within Mosyle Manager, our Apple device management solution for Education.

Reminder: what are the capabilities of Automated Device Enrollment

Automated Device Enrollment is part of Apple's Deployment Program, helping educational institutions deploy iPad and iPhone devices, Mac computers and tvOS devices faster than ever. Admins can automate the supervision process, and take advantage of zero-touch deployment and enrollment of Apple devices into the MDM solution.

In the past, DEP had its own portal, and device deployment was detached from the management of other important items for schools such as educational content and student accounts/credentials. Now with Apple School Manager, all Automated Device Enrollment capabilities can only be accessed through the portal. This is beneficial to schools because now all the capabilities can be accessed at once in the same platform (Apple School Manager).

Apple School Manager helps administrators simplify initial device setup by automating supervision and enrollment. Apple devices can be pre-configured to require mandatory, automatic enrollment with the MDM solution. You can also configure them to prevent users from removing the management profile. This ensures that the devices will be configured correctly and all students and teachers will receive these settings on their devices.

To take advantage of all the Automated Device Enrollment capabilities, the devices need to be enrolled in the Apple School Manager portal. Next, you will need to create an Automated Device Enrollment profile using your MDM solution for Education and select the Apple devices that are going to receive the profile during enrollment.

Previously, with DEP, schools could only enroll their devices if they had been bought directly from Apple, from a participating Apple Authorized Reseller or from a cellular carrier.

However, with iOS 11, admins are able to enroll the iPhone and iPad devices, as well as Apple TVs, into Apple School Manager and take advantage of the new Automated Device Enrollment capabilities. Any device purchased running this version of the operating system or higher can be enrolled using the Apple Configurator 2 software, no matter where it came from. This decision benefits many educational institutions that have donated devices. Learn more about enrolling donated devices here.

Greatest New Capability: Customized Setup Assistant

The biggest new capability available for Automated Device Enrollment is customizing screens students see when they first turn on the device using the Setup Assistant. You can now configure the screens that will be displayed to the end-user before completing the Automated Device Enrollment process with personalized steps.

This feature allows you to create web view screens with information such as Welcome, Passcode, Agreement and Login pages. You can also feature items such as end-user license agreement, user authentication (using SSO and/or Mosyle Auth) and completing assignments to a shared cart. This will further enhance the user experience for all Apple devices that are enrolled using this method, including iOS, iPadOs, macOS and tvOS devices.
